Are silver contact tips worth it?

Not all contact tips are created equally. There are different material selection choices that can be made to enhance performance. While standard E-Cu electrolytic copper contact tips are the most common, they are far from the best. For high amperage, high duty cycle applications, we strongly recommend silver plated CuCrZr contact tips.
What even is CuCrZr?
CuCrZr stands for Copper Chromium Zirconium (chrome-zirc for short), a precipitation hardened copper alloy engineered for higher strength and better heat resistance than standard electrolytic copper.
CuCrZr is about 50% harder than E-Cu, making it significantly more resistant to mechanical wear. This is especially valuable when feeding cored wire, as the imprints of knurled drive rolls result in a highly abrasive wire that can cause excessive wear of E-Cu tips.Â
The softening point of CuCrZr is approximatly 500°C, versus around 260°C for E-Cu. The effective result is that CuCrZr tips are better at maintaining shape under heat, making them ideal for spray arc applications in air-cooled MIG guns where the tip is subjected to extreme thermal loads. This contributes to more stable wire feeding and arc performance and a longer tip life.
Our silver contact tips are made of CuCrZr at their core.
Why add the silver coating?
The silver coating adds another layer of performance benefits to the contact tip. Silver has extremely high electrical conductivity, which helps improve current transfer between the contact tip and welding wire. Silver also offers superior thermal conductivity, meaning it absorbs and dissipates heat faster than copper alloys. This extends the time before the CuCrZr hits the critical 500°C softening temperature.
Benefits of silver-coated contact tips can include:
- Smoother arc starts
- More stable electrical transfer
- Reduced heat buildup
- Lower spatter adhesion
- Improved overall efficiency
The silver coating can also help prevent consumables from seizing or galling during prolonged use. One of the biggest enemies of MIG consumables is heat. For high duty cycle welding such as long single pass welds or robotic applications, this can be the difference between finishing your weld without a problem or adding a stop/start to the process.
Silver-coated CuCrZr tips are beneficial in demanding welding conditions like production welding, robotic welding, high-amperage MIG applications, and heavy fabrication environments. By switching to silver tips, welders will notice improved consistency and reduced tip replacement frequency.
What's the catch?
There is no catch. We maxed out the design specifications of our tips, purchased in bulk directly from the factory, and passed the savings directly to you. Silver plated Chrome-Zirc contact tips cost us more than twice as much as E-Cu, but through efficient supply chain management, the cost to the customer is kept in-line with OEM copper. For fab shops and production environments where consumable usage adds up quickly, cost savings like this make a meaningful difference over time.
